Location

Now it’s time to start planning the Ultimate Child Theme Party, but the first question to answer is where do you have it? There are so many options and picking the “right” one can be difficult for some people. Just remember, as long as your child’s family and friends are there, the location really doesn’t matter to them. So pick somewhere that is convenient and easy for you to setup and clean up in a minimal amount of time. Now keep reading for more Ultimate Kid Theme Party Ideas.

* Space: I am not sure what the age limit is on getting a ride to space or even how much it costs. But I thought it would be a neat idea anyways. BUT, since actually flying to space seems out of the question, how about turning your "home" into an orbit? Wow, now that sounds really neat and very difficult. But don't worry, transforming your home into an "orbit" is not going to be as hard as it sounds...I promise. Keep reading through the decorations, invitations, etc, and you will find more information on how easy it will be for you to make the transformation happen. But first, I would suggest checking out our selection of Clip Art and Coloring Pages. You will find a ton of information and pictures that I know you won't be able to use it all!!! Now, what are the benefits of having a party at your home? You might be thinking NO WAY!!! But wait, first I know you won’t forget any crucial party items at your home (e.g. piñata bat). Second, that reservation won’t get screwed up…because you are already there! Finally, you know where everything is, how convenient. Now don’t get me wrong, you do run the risk of damage and such, so be sure to weigh the benefits and risks and pick what’s best for you and your child!

* Space Park: An excellent Kid Theme Party Location is the local park. Now there are a lot of benefits of having the party outdoors...and I think the most obvious is the surroundings. You aren't at "your" home where something of "yours" could get broke. You have more opportunity to really decorate the area how "you" want. But to get started on selecting the "Ultimate Park", begin by making a list of all the local parks/water parks in the area and write down the key features of each one. For example, how much area is available? is there a playground? tennis court? trash can availability? bathrooms? covered areas? capacity of park? etc. You don’t want to show up at an overcrowded park, with no playground or bathrooms and it starts to rain. Spend some time in selecting the right park and I guarantee your party will run a lot smoother. Don't worry, you'll still be able to use a lot of the decorating ideas from this site, so don't stop here...keep reading for more kid theme party ideas!

* Out of this Universe Party: How about transporting all the guests down to a local rented party establishment on a space flight? Now why would you want to do that? Well, one great thing about renting an establishment is they sometimes provide you with invitations, discounts on food, a cake, etc. Make sure you find a decent place that provides you with enough stuff to balance out the rental cost. Don’t be afraid to ask for food discounts and other items, you will be surprised on what they will offer, but only if you ask! Also, ask if you can bring your own decorations...

* Party Slogan: Before we get into the designing process, why don’t you pick out a party slogan? Pick something that your party could be developed around. Here are a few child birthday party ideas to help you:

1. "Blast Off at "Child's Name" Party! "

2. "Explore the Unknown with Space Captain "Child's Name""

Before we get started, I have listed a few kid theme party ideas on the design of the invitation and then I will give you ideas on what to say inside.

* Space Kid Theme Party Invitation #1: First, find a picture of an astronaut on the internet. Next, use a photo cropping program to insert your child's face on top of the astronaut's body. Print them out on cardstock and put a verse from below on the inside.

* Space Kid Theme Party Invitation #2: Make a simple invitation using clipart from a printshop program. Instead of using a normal font, check out this NASA font.

* Space Kid Theme Party Invitation #3: Another idea for a simple invitation is to draw a space shuttle flying over a planet. Place this wording under the space shuttle, but on top of the planet, "Please help "child's name" celebrate his "age" birthday!

* Here is a list of safari birthday party theme verses you could include in your party invitations *

Decorations

Picking out, setting up and fine tuning the decorations can be a long tedious process. But, there is hope, because with a little planning and creativity, it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of the party. I have compiled some kid theme party ideas that start with the outside decorations and finishes with the inside decorations. You can use all, some or none of the ideas, but no matter which kid theme party ideas you choose, they will help turn your party location into the Ultimate Party Location.

First, let's start with the outdoor decorations:

Attach a bouquet of helium filled balloons to a light post or mailbox so there will be no mistaking where the fun will be that day!

Line the driveway and sidewalk with the patriotic american flags.

Attach these great galaxy static clings to your front window.

Make a sign for the front door that reads something like, "WELCOME TO THE NASA, in preparation for our mission, we ask that you remove all outdoor footwear. Please report to the mission specialist to pick up your jet pack and uniform.  All Astronauts will then enter the shuttle in preparation for departure.  Lift off time will be 11:45 A.M.   Re-entry into earth's atmosphere will take place at approximately 1:30 P.M.   Please enjoy your space adventure."

You could either put this Ultimate Space customized birthday banner either outside or inside the party area. It's up to you!

Here is an easy way to make a great birthday banner. Use a white vinyl shower liner and 10" black vinyl letters (you can purchase these from an officer supply store). On the banner you can write something like, NASA or Planet "child's name". You can also let your children or guests draw space "stuff" all over it.

Place this inflatable astronaut on your front porch to welcome the guests!

Now, let’s move inside the party location and decorate…

Let’s start with the simple decorating. Tie helium balloons of different shades of black, white, blue, yellow, silver, etc. in clusters of 3 or 5 to the back of chairs or tucked into corners. Don't forget to tie a bunch of balloons to the birthday child’s chair. If you choose not to use helium, tie balloons to varying lengths of curling ribbon, and hang them from the ceiling or from light fixtures throughout the house.

Here are two Ultimate Latex balloons for your party: Space Orbit Mylar Balloon or Astronaut JUMBO Mylar Balloon Add Childs Face.

Let's start with a simple picture backdrop. What better than a Space Shuttle Standee for the children to enjoy.

Next, let’s move on to another simple, yet familiar decorating item, Streamers. Streamers offer an economical way to splash lots of color around the site of the party. Create a fun and colorful effect by draping rainbow colored metallic streamers from the center of the ceiling to the walls on each side of the room. The streamers can be twisted after they are anchored to a ceiling wall or table for a more dimensional look. Two different colored streamers can be placed back to back and twisted for a unique look. After you are done, it should look like a spiral rainbow above the room! They also look terrific hanging from doorframes or cascading vertically down walls. Streamers are an excellent Space Kid Theme Party Idea.

Check out this great inflatable solar system to hang in the party area. The children will love it!

What about putting glow stars on the ceiling. Then during the party you could turn the lights off for a star gazing event.

Draw a huge picture of an astronaut and hang it on a wall for all the guests to write a birthday message on for your child.

Make big stars out of gold poster board and glue space ships and comets on one side and hang them from the ceiling along with laminated pictures of space shuttles.

Clear out all toys and books, except for those related to space.

Purchase black poster board and glow in the dark space stickers to cover the windows. This will allow you make a more "space" atmosphere.

Hang up balls of newspaper from the ceiling. These make great asteroids!

Make collages of different space items to hang around the party area. Check out our Free Clipart Section for ideas.

I hope you enjoyed all these space kid theme party ideas for decorations!

Ice Breaker Activities

Trying to keep the guests attention until the party starts isn't an easy task. But with these kid theme party ideas listed below you won't have any problems!

Let those who’ve arrived early play with Bubbles while they wait for the other guests to arrive.

Don’t forget to check out the great collection of coloring pages I have compiled. A coloring activity is a great way to keep the children occupied until the party starts. Plus, you can send their pictures home in their goody bag.

A simple game of Space, Space, Asteroid (i.e. duck, duck, goose) is a great ice breaker activity. You can keep adding children to the circle as they arrive. I have yet to find a child who doesn't like this game, it’s a classic!!!

Freeze Dance is another great game to get kids acquainted. The game doesn't require a certain number of kids, so they can join in as they arrive. Play "I wanna be an Astronaut" as the kids dance. If you stop the music, they must freeze. If they don’t freeze, they are out. The game restarts after all the children have been eliminated except one. Kids love to dance and play games, which makes this an Ultimate Space Kid Theme Party Idea.

Have the children decorate a large birthday banner in honor of your child that says, “Happy Birthday, Name”. You can get a large roll of paper from a store like Target. Give the children crayons, stickers, and other such items to use.

Story time with puppet show: Make the puppets by printing characters off web sites & laminating them.  Attach to Popsicle sticks.

Cover one wall in newsprint so the kids can work on a mural of the universe while everyone is arriving.

Have an art activity where the children decorate a paper bag for the pinata favors.

Setup a "Design Your Own Planet" arts and crafts station. Have a styrofoam ball for each child which includes a silver elastic loop attached with a paper fastener. Also put out glue, various little dishes of glitter, confetti, markers, etc.

Set out as many space toys as your child has. This way the children could have a choice between playing with toys or doing an activity.

Space Kid Theme Party Refreshments:

* Power Drinks: Powerade or Gatorade
* You can serve the drinks that children love, such as, Capri Suns, Kool-Aid Koolers, Kool-Aid Jammers, boxed juice, etc.

Space Kid Theme Party Cake:

Deciding on whether you are going to make or buy the Ultimate cake is a tough decision. It mainly depends on how much time you have and how many guests are coming. I would suggest for a smaller party, you try and make that Ultimate cake. But if there is going to be a large number of guests, maybe a large cake made by the baker would be the best decision. It’s up to you, but here are some Kid Theme Party Ideas for making an Ultimate Space cake.

Astronaut on the Moon: Start by using a Wilton 12" round pan and make a 2-layer round cake. Frost the sides white, as well as the bottom third or so of the cake's top. The rest of the top frost in deep blue. On the white part (the moon's surface) use a small spoon to make "craters" in the icing, and set tiny astronaut figures from a local toy store on it. Stick a toothpick with an American flag on top too. As for the sky, just sprinkle small white nonpareils around to look like stars. To make the distant Earth, use a Mother's frosted oatmeal cookie, decorated with a little blue and green icing, and stick it up near the top of the cake.

Click on this Ultimate Cake for the directions on how to make it.
