Location

Now it’s time to get started on planning the party, but where do you have it? There are so many options and picking the “right” one can be very difficult to some people. Just remember, as long as your child’s family and friends are there, the location really doesn’t matter to them. So pick somewhere that is convenient and easy for you to setup and clean up in a minimal amount of time…

* Care Bears Castle: What a perfect way to celebrate your child’s birthday at the Care Bear's Castle. Now, I don’t actually mean go there, but transform your house in the Ultimate Care Bear Party location. How you ask? First, you need a little creativity. Second, check out the section on decorations. Finally, review our Ultimate Clip Art and Coloring Pages section. There will be plenty of ideas to help you get started. What are the benefits of having a party at your house? Where should I start? First, you won’t forget any crucial party items (e.g. piñata bat) at home. Second, the reservation for the restaurant might get put down wrong and when you show up they don't have anymore room. Finally, you know where everything is at in your house, just in case something unexpected happens. I’m not saying your house is the perfect place because you also consider the drawbacks, such as, something getting damaged. So make sure you weigh the pros and cons of each party location before deciding.

* Care Bears Park: This is another excellent location for the party theme. Make a list of all the local parks in the area and write down the key features of each one. For example, how much area? is there a playground? trash can availability? Bathrooms? covered areas? Capacity of park? etc. You don’t want to show up at an overcrowded park, with no playground, no bathrooms and it starts to rain. Spend some time in selecting the right park and your party will run a lot smoother.

* Care Bears Rainbow: Want to rent an establishment for the party location? A lot of will provide you with invitations, discounts on food, a cake, etc. Make sure you find a decent place that provides you with enough stuff to balance out the cost. Don’t be afraid to ask for food discounts and other items, you will be surprised on what they will offer, but only if you ask!

Take the ideas, as is, or alter them to fit “your” taste. I am sure with the ideas listed below you will be able to create the Ultimate Party Invitation!!! Enjoy…

* Invitation Help: As you start to create this invitation masterpiece, don't forget to check out the Care Bears clip art for lots of different pictures. They will definitely help you design the inside and out. Good Luck!

* Care Bears Invitation #1: A simple, yet creative, method is to purchase cloud scrap booking paper from your local store and print the invitation on a 1/2 sheet.

Decorations

Picking out, setting up and fine tuning the decorations can be a long tedious process. But, there is hope, because with a little planning and creativity, it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of the party. I have compiled ideas that start with the outside decorations and finishes with the inside decorations. You can use all, some or none of the ideas, but no matter which ones you choose, they will help you turn your party location into the Ultimate Party Location.

First, let's start with the outdoor decorations:

Attach a bouquet of helium filled balloons to a light post or mailbox so there will be no mistaking where the fun will be that day!

Make a path of alternating rainbows & hearts from the driveway to the front door using sidewalk chalk.

Decorate the front door by tracing 2 Care Bears welcoming each guest as they arrived. Across the top of the door can be balloons and a rainbow. If you have access to an overhead projector, it will be a lot easier!!!

Make a sign to hang above the door that states your party theme. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Join (Child's Name) in the Kingdom of Caring!
Come Wish Upon a Shooting Star at (Child's Name) Care Bears Party!

Or you can use this great "Care Bears" Birthday Banner...

Now, let’s move inside the party location and decorate…

Let’s start with the simple decorating. Tie helium balloons of different shades of yellow, blue or any other color of the rainbow in clusters of 3 or 5 to the back of chairs or tucked into corners. Don't forget to tie a bunch of balloons to the birthday child’s chair. If you choose not to use helium, tie balloons to varying lengths of curling ribbon, and hang them from the ceiling or from light fixtures throughout the house.

Next, let’s move on to another simple, yet familiar decorating item, Streamers. Streamers offer an economical way to splash lots of color around the site of the party. Create a fun and colorful effect by draping rainbow colored metallic streamers from the center of the ceiling to the walls on each side of the room. The streamers can be twisted after they are anchored to a ceiling wall or table for a more dimensional look. Two different colored streamers can be placed back to back and twisted for a unique look. After you are done, it should look like a spiral rainbow above the room! They also look terrific hanging from doorframes or cascading vertically down walls.

Here is some great Happy Birthday Confetti to place on the tables and around the party area.

Another great idea is to print out some great pictures from our Care Bears Clip Art Page. Have them laminated and place them around the party area.

* Kelly's Party Plan: I used both light pink and dark pink streamers around the room and then ran the streamers up towards the ceiling from the cake table in a triangle. I topped the triangle off with a plate with the party design. I used matching "Girls First Birthday" streamer on the cake table, food tables, and gift table. I placed Mylar care bear baloons with plain pink balloons at each end of the food table, and also spread out pink baloons and pink baloons with teddy bears and the number one on them all around the room. Each kid got to take home one of the balloons and the mylar balloons now hang in my daughters room.

Party Tableware

The colors of the party should be pretty simple. I would stick with the colors of the rainbow (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Orange, Purple, Brown, and Black). You could also throw in some Black and White for a space twist on the theme. After you have selected the party theme colors, move on to selecting either printed or solid color party tableware.

Here is a great selection of Care Bears themed party tableware:

* Care Bears Luncheon Napkins
* Hot Pink Plastic Cutlery
* Care Bears Birthday Cups
* Yellow Plastic Table cover
* Care Bears Cone Hats
* Care Bears Blowouts
* Heart Shaped Bucket
* Care Bears Table cover
* Care Bears Centerpiece

Going solo on your party theme? Can’t find any party theme tableware you like? Then take a look at the silverware, plates, napkins, etc in solid colors. You’re guaranteed to find a color that matches your theme.

* Kelly's Party Plan: I purchased enough plates, cups, etc. from various web sites for 48 guests. These all contained the "It's a girl's first birthday - care bear theme" then I added plain pink plates, cups, etc for the rest of the 100 invited guests. I even had forks and spoons with carebears on the ends. I purchased care bear centerpieces for the middle guest table and spread party hats along all three tables.

Ice Breaker Activities

Let those who arrive early play with Bubbles while they wait for the other guests to arrive.

Don’t forget to check out the great collection of coloring pages I have compiled. This is a great coloring activity to keep the children occupied until the party starts. Plus, you can send them home in their goody bag.

A simple game of Duck, Duck, Hey you're a bear (i.e. duck, duck, goose) is a great ice breaker activity. You can keep adding children to the circle after they arrive. I have yet to find a child who doesn't like this game, it’s a classic!!!

How about a little bit of face paint for those little guests? As your guests arrive, decorate their cheeks with their favorite Care Bear symbols: rainbows, hearts, suns, shamrocks, moons, rain clouds, or whatever you can think of!

Freeze Dance is another great game to get kids acquainted. The game doesn't require a certain number of kids, so they can join in as they arrive. Play the Journey to Joke-A-Lot soundtrack as the kids dance. If you stop the music, they must freeze. If they don’t freeze, they are out. The game restarts after all the children have been eliminated except 1. Kids love to dance and play games, which makes this an Ultimate Ice Breaker Activity.

Play "Guess that Bear", have the children describe feelings/colors while the others try and guess which bear these belong to.

Care-A-Lot Craft: Start by cutting clouds out of light blue construction paper (two for each child) and cut out suns and rainbow streamers. Have the children color and decorate their suns and clouds with markers, Care Bear stickers and stamps.

Food

Picking out the perfect food, refreshments, treats and cake should be a fun experience. Think of clever names for each item that relates back to the Care Bears theme. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Care Bears Child Birthday Party Idea for Food:

* Peanut Butter sandwiches cut in the shape of bears
* Rainbow Goldfish
* Rainbow Colored Marshmallows
* Rice Krispie treats made with Fruity Pebbles
* Star Shaped Sandwiches
* Rainbow Fruit Salad

Food: We had hot dogs, chips, dips, pickles, shumai (a japanese dumpling), potstickers, macaroni salad, garlic pasta salad, baked beans and in special salad bar bowls which were a great hit I also had fruit salad, and tossed salad. These bowls held the lettuce in the middle and the fixings for the salad all around the edges, so that people could put whatever they wanted in them. The fruit salad bowl had melons in the middle and berries of all sorts around the edges.

Care Bears Child Birthday Party Idea for Refreshments:

* Magical Rainbow Drinks - Sprite with colored star and heart ice cubes
* Care Bear Cloud Juice - Start by serving blue punch. After you have placed a filled glass in front of each guest, add some magic "care dust" (a few Pop Rocks candies).
* You can serve the drinks that children love, such as, Capri Suns, Kool-Aid Koolers, Kool-Aid Jammers, boxed juice, etc.

Care Bears Child Birthday Party Idea for Cake:

Deciding on whether you are going to make or buy the Ultimate cake is a tough decision. It mainly depends on how much time you have and how many guests are coming. I would suggest for a smaller party, you try and make that Ultimate cake. But if there is going to be a large number of guests, maybe a large cake made by the baker would be the best decision. It’s up to you, but here are some ideas on making an Ultimate Care Bears cake.

Rainbow Cake: Start by baking a 9 inch round cake. Cut it in half lengthwise forming 2 semicircles. Bring both halves together, "standing" the cake on the longer, cut sides. Then cut out a small semicircle at the bottom to form the space for rainbow's arch. Decorate with colored icings to look like a rainbow.

Party Favors

* Foam Bug Glasses
* Plastic Cups w/ insect
* Love Bugs Magic Screens
* Plastic Bug Jumpers
* Paint Your Own Bug Assortment
* Bug Beads
* See Through Bug Boxes
* Bug Nets
* Insect Rings

* Erica's Plan: For favors, I personalized each child's bag of goodies by using cookie cutters to make butterfly nametags out of foam for the girls and created a version of the caterpillar for the boys. I ran a chenille stem through each side so that they could hang them up when they got home. Inside the paper bag that I scrunched like a cocoon where butterfly shaped cookies, stickers, butterfly and caterpillar pencils and erasers, and a few other seasonal treats.

Thank You Notes

Now the parties over, what do you do? Plan the next one? Sure, but you don’t want to forget about the guests that helped you celebrate your child’s birthday. Make sure you send every guest a thank you note. Whether it’s store bought or hand made, just make sure to get it out no later than a week after the party. Also, if you took any pictures at the party, try to include one in each invitation.

* Erica 's Plan: For thank you notes we always write a newsletter recapping our child's year with a "story" about the party. This year we enclosed the pictures taken during the hungry caterpillar game and sealed the envelopes with butterfly stickers. Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time despite their age and the game was such a big hit that my neighbor borrowed it for a family reunion she was throwing. It was very inexpensive because the invitations and decorations only required paper, markers, paint and cardboard. The most expensive purchase (aside from food) was the wooden stakes for the food cut outs. But it was worth it and we've used them for other projects since. This theme was really fun and imaginative. It would work well for girls or boys. I hope it inspires you to choose some of your child's favorite books for party theme ideas.
